CBC scores well on lower/primary school allocations

According to a report in the Daily Telegraph, Central Bedfordshire has scored amongst the best in the country for being able to satisfy a significant proportion of parents' first choices for schools in the lower/primary allocations released today.

  1. So, explain Stotfold, where in the news today, several local families living yards from their school, were not allocated places, and instead have been offered places over 5 miles away. http://www.bedfordshire-news.co.uk/News/Stotfold-school-rejection-for-boy-4-living-just-500m-away-20140420150057.htm

  2. If 98% of families got one of their first three choices, then simple maths shows that 2% did not. Nobody achieves 100% and there will always be areas of rapid population growth where demand will outstrip supply. I think that it is fair comment to highlight a high percentage of positive allocations.

I have every sympathy for those amongst the disappointed 2%; hopefully they may achieve satisfaction through the appeals process or gain a space at a preferred school via the waiting list if, as often happens, other parents do not take up a place offered to them.

  3. Do you think Central Bedfordshire Council is taking infrastructure seriously enough? When new homes are given the go ahead, I am concerned that resources are not being put in place fast enough to meet demands for services that will inevitably follow.

    1. Infrastructure is always a concern, but I have seen and heard enough to feel that CBC is not ignoring or trivializing the issue.

Major items like roads and schools cost tens of millions and will be of benefit to thousands of households; significant step changes will always look out of step alongside gradual and continual housing and population growth. Resources are continuously reviewed, scheduled and budgeted for.
